Our team

Michael K. Allio

Michael is a strategy, measurement, and implementation specialist, offering clients 25 years of diverse operating and strategy consulting experience. He launched Allio Associates in 2001, and recently returned from a 3-year assignment at the Gates Foundation, where he served as the pioneering Deputy Director of Strategy & Management. Previously, Michael served as Chairman and interim CEO of a development-stage biotech firm, Director and Principal of a manufacturing start-up, a management consultant, and as a consumer products marketing executive.

Recent work

Michael’s responsibilities at Gates included translating strategy into practical implementation programs, designing portfolio and performance management systems, and enhancing alignment, leverage, and impact of $1B in grants and contracts. His measurement work focused on creating implementation metrics, outcome evaluations, and data systems for a $400M annual investment portfolio.

Experience

Mr. Allio’s consulting portfolio includes directing more than 50 business and corporate strategy development and implementation programs for a diverse set of organizations, ranging from Fortune 100 firms to startups and government agencies. He has managed restructuring programs, spearheaded marketing strategies, and forged strategic alliances for clients in the US, Europe, the Caribbean, and India. Example projects:

- business strategy development for the middle-market portfolio companies of a $400M
  private equity firm

Michael's operating experience ranges from Fortune 1000 to startup firms. He started his career in marketing at Revlon, and has led and grown startups in the biotech (HIV therapeutics) and manufacturing (automotive and hardware) sectors. With both startup firms his scope included strategy, operations' management, product development, marketing, fundraising, and strategic alliances. He is particularly proud of successful strategic partnerships he structured with Black & Decker, Home Depot, and GM. Michael's tenure at the Gates Foundation included portfolio design, management and measurement for $1B in cumulative distributions in the US Program.

Additional background

Mr. Allio has published more than 20 articles on strategy, and one book: "Practical Strategy For Family Businesses", co-authored with Robert Allio, was released by McGraw Hill in 2005. His articles appear in the Journal of Business Strategy, Strategy & Leadership, and elsewhere. He is an honors graduate of Harvard, where he was a John Harvard Scholar, and speaks fluent French (when appropriate). He has served on a number of Boards, and has enjoyed providing pro-bono counsel to impactful non-profits.

Robert J. Allio

Dr. Allio is noted strategist, educator, and author. He offers a broad range of experience and insight: he has led top-level strategy consulting and management education projects for hundreds of firms in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and India.

Consulting experience

Dr. Allio founded his first management consulting firm, Robert J. Allio & Associates, Inc., in Boston, after leaving Arthur D. Little, in 1979. Over the past three decades, his clients have included 3M, New York Life, GTE, Digital Equipment, Allied-Signal, Dominion Textile, Dupont, USX, Weyerhaeuser, and the U.S., Canadian, and Puerto Rican governments.

Corporate & academic background

Dr. Allio’s corporate background includes senior operating experience with Babcock & Wilcox, General Electric, Noranda Mines, and Westinghouse Electric. His academic background includes positions as Dean of the School of Management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was instrumental in launching one of the country’s earliest successful incubator programs. He has also held an appointment as Professor of Management at Babson College.

Dr. Allio’s publishing experience is also significant. He has authored more than 100 articles on strategic management, and a number of books. His latest, Seven Faces Of Leadership, presents his perspective on strategy and leadership.

Additional background

Dr. Allio has designed and led seminars on strategy and leadership for The Conference Board, Business Week, the YPO, and many other private and professional organizations. He is past-president of the North American Society for Corporate Planning. He has served on the Board of Directors of several private firms, and has been particularly active in the non-profit sector, focusing on strategy and leadership challenges.

David J. Allio

David Allio is a strategy specialist with over 30 years of practical experience in strategy development, implementation and merger/acquisition integration. He rejoined Allio & Associates in 2007, after fifteen years of applied senior management experience. His background includes strategy consulting for Fortune 1000 and middle-market firms, financial services, and marketing and corporate development.

- Master brand identity system development for a $25M, 60-sku line of dairy products.
- Brand assessments and launch planning for a major beer brand in the Caribbean.
- Corporate development and market roll-out for an organic food company.

Experience

As a marketing and corporate development executive, David has:

- built (beverage) brands from startup to revenue of hundreds of millions
- managed multiple new brand introductions and line extensions
- turned around businesses and brands, improving efficiency and effectiveness
- acquired and integrated businesses and brands; actively managed diverse
  product/market portfolios
- developed and managed high performance teams
- led strategy development and implementation at the business and corporate level.

His financial and corporate governance experience includes:

- service on the Boards of both private and public companies in a variety of industries
- managing the investment strategy and asset allocation for a $300M investment portfolio
  and a $250M private banking entity
- leading venture screening and the IPO process for clients
- serving as an early collaborator and investor in leading PE funded companies like
  Energy Brands/Glaceau Vitamin Water, Salary.com, TracRac, and Rhythm Superfoods.

Additional background

David was educated at Trent University and completed an MBA at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. He has authored several articles and case studies on strategy and success in the consumer products arena.

William O'Farrell

Bill joined Allio Associates in 2005 and offers more than twenty-five years of entrepreneurial and management expertise. He focuses on strategic consolidations and start-ups in technology-related fields, leveraging his deep background leading and growing technology startups.

Recent projects

Mr. O’Farrell’s extensive operational and transactional experience has been drawn from starting, funding, and running companies in diverse industries, including IT software, telecommunications, biotech and consumer products. Recent projects have focused on developing strategy to reinvent a legacy IT company, financing a transactional advertising start-up, creating a fashion-focused social network, and building a renewable energy IT entity.

Experience

Bill was co-founder, Chairman and CEO of SpeechWorks, Inc., (NASDAQ:SPWX), a developer of speech recognition systems which was acquired by Nuance (NASDAQ:NUAN). He was a co-founder and head of the company which created After Effect, a video editing product acquired by Adobe Systems. He was also co-founder, Chairman and CEO of OpenAir, an application service provider of enterprise software for professional service organizations which was acquired by Netsuite (NASDAQ:N).

Bill has been involved in the founding and seed-funding of an array of other companies including The Cart-Craft Company (acquired by Country Home Products), Ironwood Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:IRWD), Dealicio, Wholeshare, and Quantitative Alternatives. He has provided strategic counsel to a number of these entities.

Bill is a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School, and splits his time between New York and Rhode Island.
